Although summertime is the season of being carefree, often having summer fun isnโt exactly free. Between vacations, holiday BBQs, and having the kids at home full-time, itโs easy for the bills to start adding up.
As part of our Summer Savings Series, here are some tips to avoid overspending without sacrificing any summer excitement:
- Cancel your streaming subscription services: What better way to get the kids outside? โCut the cordโ on your memberships to streaming platforms (temporarily, of course). It may not seem like itโs worth it at first, but those โfew bucksโ from each subscription are sure to add up!
- Try camping: Consider exchanging palm trees for pine trees. Grab some camping gear and head to a local campground or state park. If youโre new to camping, perhaps try a night camping with the family or friends in your backyard.
- Skip the car wash: Is it super-hot out and the kids are looking for something to do? Sounds like the perfect time for an old-fashioned car wash right in the driveway! Take the money you saved and add to your kidsโ chore allowance, if they have one.
- Take up gardening: With the rising cost of groceries, thereโs no better time than now to start the vegetable garden in your backyard that youโve been putting off. Start small with supplies you already have. Plus, itโs a great outdoor hobby for summer!
- Bring the gym to you: Save by cancelling your gym membership as early as May though as late as September. Thatโs nearly half the year! Invest in some workout items for the house or simply go on outdoor runs. Who wants to be on a treadmill indoors when you could be soaking up the sun with an outdoor workout?
Itโs important to note that just because youโre saving some extra money in one place, doesnโt mean you should simply spend it in another. Instead, put the cash you saved directly in your savings account.
